Meet the Math Team

Helen Kim, Elementary Math Instruction Coordinator

My name is Helen Kim and I am one of the Elementary Math Coordinators supporting the East Los Angeles Community of Schools. It has truly been a privilege to serve in the East Los Angeles area serving previously as the Dual Language Programs Coordinator and the former proud principal of El Sereno Elementary School.

In my current role as the Elementary Math Coordinator, I work closely with many of our teachers, leaders, and community members in highlighting rigorous math tasks and activities that prepare our students for college and career readiness.

Professional Development for Teachers/Administrators

Our Professional Development goal is to support teachers in developing lessons that promote patient problem solving and provide opportunities for students to apply math concepts in real life situations.  It is important for students to make connections and explore math concepts in a way that is meaningful to them.  The Common Core Standards call for a shift in how we deliver instruction for our students to be truly college and career ready.  During our Professional Development opportunities, we explore math instruction through a balance of conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application to the real world.  Emphasizing the principles of Universal Design for Learning, our professional development also allows teachers an opportunity to explore how learners can access information and demonstrate their knowledge in a variety of ways.

Parent Workshops

Our parent workshops are designed to support our parents and families in understanding the shifts in mathematics instruction as described in the Common Core Standards. We emphasize practical ways to support children at home and focus on developing a healthy math mindset.  Please view our flyer for upcoming parent workshop topics.
